Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman is the third daughter of their family. Her father, who was a carnival barker, was killed when she was a small child, forcing her mother to help support the family by working as a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She attended school in Boston. However, she was only in the school for two years, before taking a break to pursue her acting career. She faced many obstacles on the path she chose to pursue. When she was in New York she was hired to pose for photos for a publication about crime however, no theatre opportunities were offered. After working as a hat-check woman in a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. As an usherette, she worked during the early morning hours and also appeared at the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first permanent acting gig. She was a drama student in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
